From March 19th to 25th, 2025, a group of enthusiastic Grade 8 students from Castelli International School embarked on a transformative journey to New York City, participating in the prestigious Change the World Model United Nations (CWMUN). Hosted in the heart of Manhattan, this international event brought together young minds from across the globe, giving students a unique opportunity to engage in global diplomacy, sharpen their public speaking skills, and build lifelong memories.

Castelli International School students have participated in Model United Nations programs in Boston (Harvard Model United Nations) and New York (National High School United Nations) for the past 25 years. Their preparation for these conferences is seamlessly integrated into the school curriculum. The result is students willing and able to discuss, debate, and negotiate on a wide range of pressing global issues - from climate change and human rights to sustainable development and international security.

This year, our student delegates were involved in three committees: the General Assembly 6th Committee, the  World Health Organization, and the United Nations Environment Program. The discussion topics included: finding new ways to use AI to solve global problems, like environmental degradation; discussing public-private partnerships in healthcare; and finding a new legal basis for international security missions. These topics aren’t easy, however, thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Castelli faculty, the students were well-prepared. They rose to the occasion with maturity and confidence well beyond their years. Some students drafted impactful resolutions, others formed coalitions, and many took to the podium with poise, passionately advocating for their countries’ stances. Given the turbulent times we are living in, it's more important than ever to teach students about the values of cooperation, negotiation, and diplomacy.

For many of the Castelli students, this was their first time visiting the United States—and what a first impression it made! The bright lights of Times Square, the awe-inspiring views from the Empire State Building, the majestic Statue of Liberty, and the solemnity of the United Nations Headquarters set the stage for a week filled with inspiration and growth.

The students immersed themselves in the cultural richness of New York. From exploring the Museum of Modern Art to enjoying the peacefulness of Central Park, the trip balanced learning and leisure perfectly. One of the most moving moments came during their visit to the 9/11 Memorial, where students reflected on the importance of peace and international cooperation—values at the core of the UN.

The CWMUN experience enhanced students’ academic knowledge and leadership skills but also fostered a deep sense of global citizenship. The teachers praised the group for their curiosity, empathy, and professionalism throughout the trip.

As the students returned home to Italy, they brought back not only memories and souvenirs but a renewed passion for making a positive difference in the world—echoing the spirit of the United Nations and the values of Castelli International School.
