Dear Parents,
The Monthly News is back! September has been a sunny, energetic and fun-filled month at school, with our students settling happily into school life and embracing every opportunity to learn by doing.
From grape picking and nature walks to harvesting vegetables and learning how to cook them, our students have been enjoying a wonderful variety of outdoor and hands-on learning experiences. These activities are a reminder that some of the most meaningful learning happens when children can get outside, get involved and experience things for themselves.
Our traditional ‘vendemmia’ was a great success once again this year. Our students had a wonderful time harvesting the grapes. There were plenty of smiles, laughter, many sticky hands and a few very sticky feet!
Our Grade 6 students took the experience a step further with a very hands-on lesson with Mr. Paolo and Ms. Joanna on the traditional process of making wine. After crushing the grapes with their feet, they put them through the grape press and watched as the liquid grape must flowed out. In the coming weeks, students will continue to observe the fermentation process, watching how the grape must changes as it gradually transforms into wine. It is a great example of science, tradition and learning coming together in a very memorable way.
The elementary school is vibrant with the joyful sounds of children learning and playing together; colourful displays and artwork are already brightening the ‘portico’. Welcoming the students back is always a highlight, and seeing their genuine happiness to be in an environment they love is truly special.
Our youngest students have been busy exploring the natural world around them. Kindergarten and Grade 1 students headed out on a nature walk around our beautiful campus, discovering what was growing around them and filling baskets with freshly collected walnuts and almonds. The students had the chance to discover where some of the food we eat actually comes from.
Our From Earth to Table project has continued to grow, quite literally! Back in June, the students planted butternut squash and kale in the school vegetable garden. This month, the Grade 4 students returned to harvest the vegetables they had grown themselves. But the learning didn't stop in the garden. The students took their harvest to our Life-Skills Hub, where they prepared and cooked their vegetables. They cut and roasted the butternut squash cubes, adding olive oil and freshly picked rosemary. They also transformed their kale leaves into deliciously crunchy kale chips. There is something very special about growing your own food, harvesting it and then tasting something you have prepared yourself.
Learning how to cook the vegetables you grow is a precious life lesson, one that can help children become healthy, confident and independent well into their adult years.
It was wonderful to connect with parents during our recent Open House events, where we focused on the value of imbuing children with a love of reading and where we reminded parents about our 'Wait Until 8th' initiative. Designed to tackle smartphone addiction among youth, the campaign continues to gain momentum: parental participation grew from 77% last year to 83% this year across the elementary school. Including the middle school, it is now overall at 81%.
As we look back on September, we are delighted to see our students so engaged, curious and enthusiastic about learning. What a wonderful way to begin the new school year!

Eccoci di nuovo con la nostra newsletter mensile! Settembre è stato un mese soleggiato, vivace e ricco di divertimento a scuola: i nostri alunni si sono inseriti con gioia nella vita scolastica, cogliendo ogni occasione per imparare attraverso l'esperienza diretta.
Dalla vendemmia alle passeggiate nella natura, fino alla raccolta e alla preparazione in cucina delle verdure, i ragazzi hanno vissuto una splendida varietà di esperienze pratiche all'aperto. Queste attività ci ricordano che alcuni degli apprendimenti più significativi avvengono quando i bambini possono uscire, partecipare attivamente e sperimentare in prima persona.
La nostra tradizionale vendemmia è stata un grande successo anche quest'anno. Gli alunni si sono divertiti moltissimo a raccogliere l'uva: non sono mancati sorrisi, risate, mani - ed anche qualche piede …..appiccicosi !
Gli alunni della 1° media hanno approfondito l'esperienza con una lezione pratica insieme a Mr. Paolo e Ms. Joanna sul processo tradizionale di vinificazione. Dopo aver pigiato l'uva con i piedi, l'hanno inserita nella pressa, osservando la fuoriuscita del mosto. Nelle prossime settimane, continueranno a seguire il processo di fermentazione, osservando come il mosto si trasforma man mano vino. È un ottimo esempio di come scienza, tradizione e apprendimento possano fondersi insieme in un’esperienza davvero indimenticabile.
La scuola primaria è animata dalle voci gioiose dei bambini che imparano e giocano insieme; colorati espositori e lavori artistici stanno già ravvivando il portico. Accogliere nuovamente gli alunni è sempre un momento speciale, ed è davvero emozionante vedere la loro felicità sincera nel ritrovarsi in un ambiente in cui si trovano a loro agio.
I nostri alunni più piccoli si sono dedicati all'esplorazione del mondo naturale che li circonda. Gli studenti della scuola dell'infanzia e della prima classe della primaria hanno fatto una passeggiata nella natura all'interno del nostro splendido campus, osservando la vegetazione circostante e riempiendo i cestini di noci e mandorle appena raccolte. Hanno così avuto l'opportunità di scoprire la provenienza di alcuni degli alimenti che consumiamo abitualmente.
Il nostro progetto "Dalla terra alla tavola" ha continuato a crescere... letteralmente! A giugno, gli studenti avevano piantato zucche butternut e cavolo riccio nell'orto scolastico. Questo mese, gli alunni della quarta sono tornati per raccogliere i frutti del loro lavoro. Ma l'apprendimento non si è limitato all'orto: i ragazzi hanno portato il raccolto nel nostro "Life-Skills Hub", dove hanno preparato e cucinato le verdure. Hanno tagliato e arrostito i cubetti di zucca butternut, condendoli con olio d'oliva e rosmarino fresco, e hanno trasformato le foglie di cavolo riccio in gustose e croccanti chips. C'è qualcosa di davvero speciale nel coltivare il proprio cibo, raccoglierlo e poi assaporare ciò che si è preparato con le proprie mani.
Imparare a cucinare le verdure che si coltivano è una lezione di vita preziosa, capace di aiutare i bambini a crescere sani, sicuri di sé e indipendenti, accompagnandoli anche nell'età adulta.
È stato molto bello incontrare voi genitori durante i recenti "Open House", occasioni in cui abbiamo sottolineato l'importanza di trasmettere ai bambini l'amore per la lettura e abbiamo ricordato l'iniziativa "Wait Until 8th". Pensata per contrastare la dipendenza da smartphone tra i giovani, la campagna continua a riscuotere successo: la partecipazione dei genitori è salita dal 77% dell'anno scorso all'83% di quest'anno nella scuola primaria; includendo anche la scuola secondaria di primo grado (middle school), la percentuale complessiva si attesta ora all'81%.
Ripensando al mese di settembre, siamo felici di vedere i nostri studenti così coinvolti, curiosi ed entusiasti di imparare. Un modo splendido per iniziare il nuovo anno scolastico!
