Dear Parents,
January was a month with numerous exciting events. We started off the New Year with the new road and new school entrance. A very special thank you to Dr. Paolo De Col and Ing. Saltarelli, who have worked tirelessly for over 5 years on this gargantuan enterprise.
The middle school students were engaged in online and in-person workshops for the Change the World Model United Nations (CWMUN) conference that will be held in Rome next week for the Grade 6 and 7 students who will be delegates on the WFP and the ECOSOC committees. They will be debating and finding solutions to one of the world’s most pressing challenges: ensuring food security, promoting nutrition and advancing sustainability.
In remembrance of the deportation to Auschwitz in 1943 of over 1000 Jews from the Roman Ghetto, the theater performance “Sciabbadai”, starring one of our students and written by G. Marcelli, was performed at school for the middle school students. This is the story of an actor who managed to escape from the Nazi deportation by hiding in a church in the Castelli Romani area. A heartfelt thank you to the theater company, Teatro della Yod, for bringing this exceptional performance to school. An important reminder not to forget this tragic time in history.
Gardening is back in full swing for all the students. They were pleased to see the broccoli they planted last term beginning to flower with broccoli heads. The students are now preparing the soil for spring planting, taking out weeds, rocks and tilling the earth. They also happily gave all the weeds they pulled out to the chickens.
After all the excitement of the Winter Shows, discos and festive activities of the previous month, the elementary children returned to school with a strong focus on their academic progress…whilst continuing to have lots of fun doing so! There was a great sense of purpose around the school as children busily worked on their favourite subjects. There has been a strong emphasis this year on the children developing a love for literature. There was a ‘Book Week’ earlier in the year and this passion for literature was further harnessed by the Grade 5s who went on a trip to visit the local library. Back at the school, there was great excitement about the new climbing wall. The children were shown how to use it, both technically and safely and have relished the chance to use this new addition to the school.
The elementary school was also treated to a workshop by children’s author - Merlynne Tuwizana - who taught the children about her writing process, what it is like to be a writer and how we can learn about ourselves, others and the world around us through the stories we read and write.
Finally, the Castelli Under 9 team did the school proud with their remarkable win at the recent RISA school football tournament. They put in four stunning performances to win all four games, scoring a remarkable eighteen goals and conceding only two. As with all Castelli sports teams, they not only played well but conducted themselves admirably.

Cari genitori,
Gennaio è stato un mese ricco di eventi entusiasmanti. Abbiamo iniziato il nuovo anno con la nuova strada e il nuovo ingresso della scuola. Un ringraziamento davvero speciale al Dott. Paolo De Col e all'Ing. Saltarelli, che hanno lavorato instancabilmente per oltre 5 anni a questo gigantesco progetto.
Gli studenti delle scuole medie sono stati impegnati in workshop, sia da remoto che in presenza, per la conferenza Change the World Model United Nations (CWMUN) che si terrà a Roma ad inizio Febbraio per gli studenti delle classi 6 e 7 che saranno delegati per i comitati del WFP e dell'ECOSOC. Essi discuteranno e troveranno soluzioni ad una delle sfide più urgenti del mondo: garantire la sicurezza alimentare, promuovere la nutrizione e promuovere la sostenibilità.
In ricordo della deportazione ad Auschwitz del 1943 di oltre 1000 ebrei dal Ghetto di Roma, gli studenti delle scuole medie hanno assistito allo spettacolo teatrale “Sciabbadai”, tenutosi presso la scuola, testo scritto da G. Marcelli ed interpretato anche da un nostro allievo. L’opera narra di un attore che riuscì a sfuggire alla deportazione nazista nascondendosi in una chiesa dei Castelli Romani. Un sentito ringraziamento alla compagnia teatrale Teatro della Yod per aver portato a scuola questo spettacolo eccezionale. Un promemoria importante per non dimenticare questo tragico momento storico.
Il giardinaggio ha ripreso a pieno ritmo per tutti gli studenti. Tutti sono stati molto contenti di vedere che, i broccoli piantati lo scorso anno, hanno cominciato a fiorire. Gli studenti stanno ora preparando il terreno per la semina primaverile, eliminando le erbacce, i sassi e dissodando il terreno. Le erbacce estirpate sono state gioiosamente date alle galline.
Passato l'entusiasmo degli spettacoli natalizi, della musica e delle varie attività del mese precedente, gli studenti delle elementari sono tornati a scuola molto concentrati sul lavoro accademico... continuando a divertirsi tantissimo! Nella scuola si respirava un’atmosfera di grande attenzione e focalizzazione sugli obiettivi didattici con i ragazzi attivamente impegnanti sulle loro materie preferite. Quest'anno è stata posta una forte enfasi sullo sviluppo dell'amore per la letteratura da parte degli studenti. All’inizio dell’anno si è svolta la “Settimana del libro” e, questa passione per la letteratura, è stata ulteriormente sfruttata dagli alunni della quinta elementare che sono andati in gita per visitare la locale biblioteca.
Al rientro a scuola c'e’ stata una piacevole sorpresa accolta con entusiasmo dai ragazzi: la nuova parete da arrampicata. Ai ragazzi è stato insegnato come utilizzarla ,sia tecnicamente che in modo sicuro e essi hanno apprezzato la possibilità di poter disporre di questa ulteriore dotazione della scuola.
La scuola elementare è stata anche protagonista di un workshop tenuto dall'autrice per bambini - Merlynne Tuwizana - che ha insegnato ai bambini il suo processo di scrittura, cosa vuol dire essere uno scrittore e come possiamo conoscere noi stessi, gli altri e il mondo che ci circonda attraverso le storie che leggiamo e scriviamo.
Infine, l'Under 9 di Castelli ha reso orgogliosa la scuola con la straordinaria vittoria al recente torneo di calcio scolastico RISA. I ragazzi hanno messo a segno quattro prestazioni straordinarie vincendo tutte e quattro le partite del torneo, segnando ben diciotto gol e subendone solo due. Come tutte le squadre sportive della Castelli, non solo essi hanno giocato bene , ma si sono comportate egregiamente.
